**Note - while the unity symbol is being performed, we suggest music or some sort of reading to add more emotion to the moment! Silence can be awkward for your guests who are watching. To help make the decision easier on you, we've done our research and compiled a list of a few of the most popular (and more obscure) unity symbols. Some symbols are religious, and some are cultural, so if you or your fiance doesn't like any of these ideas, it may be better just to go without! You want to keep it sweet, meaningful, and classy.

The Kadlee team highly recommends it, but our only issue is that there are a very limited number of things you can do that aren't ridiculous. Today we're talking about unity symbols - the moment in the wedding ceremony where you and your spouse perform an action to demonstrate two lives becoming one. And yet, there are other traditional elements that most brides include, of course (walking down the aisle, a first dance, personal vows, etc.). As long as you have an officiant and vows, it's a wedding. Your wedding is a "choose your own adventure" day you make the decisions about how you want it to look, feel, and flow. Today, weddings are much more diverse, with first looks, after-parties, jumpsuit and non-whitewedding dresses, photobooths, and more (though some have argued that Pinterest makes every wedding the same anyway). Exchanging rings is also almost universal.īack before the wedding industry boom, it seems that all weddings followed a traditional path and timeline. An officiant - you can't marry yourselves, you have to have a witness - and vows - the whole point of a wedding is to agree to marry someone, to bind yourselves together with enduring promises. There are two things that are absolutely required for a wedding to be a wedding. Like the tree you are planting, your relationship will need love and care to grow and bloom.Looking for inspiration? Tree planting- Taking soil from each of your hometown’s or from each of your parent’s homes and adding them together is a sweet sentiment. Wash each other’s feet- While this ceremony has Christian origins, the purpose is one that is truly universal, an act of caregiving to symbolize your love and devotion to each other. Simply pass out the lanterns and have your guests write their own wishes! This is also a great option for couples who want all of their guests to be involved. Releasing a sky lantern- The couple would each write a wish for your future or a blessing for your marriage on the lantern and then let it soar into the skies after you say your vows.

After you exchange vows, your each use one of the candles to light the unity candle. At the beginning of the ceremony a member from each family lights one of the taper candles. Before the ceremony three candles are placed on the altar: two taper candles and one large candle in the middle. Unity candle- This is by far the most traditional unity ceremony option, so it’s perfect for couples who want that classic feel. Paint pouring on a blank canvas- this is fun and different and something you can hang in your home to view for years to come! The two paint colors blend and bring life to the empty canvas together, creating a modern-art representation of the marriage. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ideas and are sharing them here for you all! What you do for a unity ceremony is one of those pieces! Some couples go traditional with lighting candles, others more modern with releasing lanterns and some skip it altogether! There are so many pieces of your day that you can make unique and cater to your individual preferences. One of our Wedding Wednesday topics recently was different ideas for unity ceremonies! We love how each and every wedding can be so different.
